Derren Brown – Predict lottery results?   by Eflex Computers

Greetings to all of our followers, in today’s blog we will be taking a slightly new approach to enable us to discuss a very hot topic at the moment that’s been circulating in our offices here at Eflex Computers

For those of you that didn’t watch the TV programme on Wednesday night Derren Brown correctly ‘predicted’ the national lottery results live on channel 4, whilst the lottery draw was taking place over on BBC1. The debates that ensued in our offices over the next few days raised some very interested theories (and also meant we didn’t manage to get a lot of work done). Our computer programmers were bombarded by requests from other members of staff asking them to create a ‘lottery predictor’ program that we could all use to get rich quick! If Derren Brown can do it then so can a computer right? Wrong!

The lottery is monitored to ensure it is entirely random, that means that every week the chances of any 6 numbers coming out are exactly the same as the week before. No patterns, frequent numbers etc have any bearing on the next week’s results and so to create a program that looks for these patterns would be a complete waste of time.

Our computer programmers did have an interesting theory however on how Derren Brown actually managed to make it look like he had predicted the results. As Derren was in an empty studio with no audience they suggest that the actual image we saw on the left hand side showing the lottery balls was in fact a pre recorded ‘feed’ overlaid onto the main picture of Derren and the TV screen showing the results coming in. Then when Derren had all the results someone simply placed the correct numbered balls onto the rack and the overlay was removed. Our programmers assure us that this could be done fairly easily and give a seamless transition so little or no viewers could even notice it had happened.

Tonight on channel 4 Derren will be revealing how he managed to perform this trick and we at Eflex Computers really do hope it was done in an exciting and unique way that we didn’t manage to think of! Mainly so we can spend Monday morning discussing it and also prove our computer programmers wrong (they are so rarely wrong we have to seize our opportunities!)

If you have any different theories or are reading this after Derren has revealed the trick and would like to throw in your opinion then please visit our blog at http://www.eflexcomputers.com/ and leave your comments. If Derren has found a way to predict the lottery then I wont be buying a ticket on Saturday and sharing the jackpot with the other 10 million people who saw the TV programme that’s for sure!

For several weeks, the newspapers had been tracking the Mid-States Lottery prize and printing the total amount for the potential winner. After the amount rose to five hundred million dollars just about everyone started to take notice of this unheard-of amount. People started to line up for tickets. There were people coming from nearby, and even faraway states to buy tickets in the states that sold them. Not every state had joined in this lottery. There were six participating states. The benefit to each of these states was to obtain funds for various projects. School, education, even health funding among other plans were to benefit from the results. It was approaching the largest amount in the history of any lottery. It was generating a great deal of attention. The larger the prize became the more interest accrued and the ticket sales increased. Twice a week the amount increased when there was no winner. At first, after the five hundred million plateau, it jumped by just under two million at each biweekly announcement. A major newspaper reported that people from England and other foreign countries were buying tickets after the prize reached this five hundred million level. As this amount increased to more than five hundred million, the prize advanced almost five million in each biweekly announcement.

This work is a complete mathematical guide to lottery games, covering all of the problems related to probability, combinatorics, and all parameters describing the lottery matrices, as well as the various playing systems. The mathematics sections describe the mathematical model of the lottery, which is in fact the essence of the lotto game. The applications of this model provide players with all the mathematical data regarding the parameters attached to the gaming events and personal playing systems. By applying these data, one can find all the winning probabilities for the play with one line (for each category in part or cumulatively), and how these probabilities change with playing the various types of systems containing several lines, depending on their structure. Also, each playing system has a formula attached that provides the number of possible multiple prizes in various circumstances. Other mathematical parameters of the playing systems and the correlations between them are also presented. The generality of the mathematical model and of the obtained formulas allows their application for any existent lottery (including variations like Keno) and any playing system. Each formula is followed by numerical results covering the most frequent lottery matrices worldwide and by multiple examples predominantly belonging to the 6/49 lottery. The listing of the numerical results in dozens of well-organized tables, along with instructions and examples of using them, makes possible the direct usage of this guide by players without a mathematical background. The author also discusses from a mathematical point of view the strategies of choosing involved in the lotto game. The book does not offer so-called winning strategies (proving that the only strategy is that of choosing), but helps players to better organize their own playing systems and to confront their own convictions (so many times based on false perceptions) with the incontestable reality offered by the direct applications of the mathematical model of the lotto game. As a must-have handbook for any lottery player, this book offers essential information about the game itself and can provide the basis for gaming decisions of any kind.

A funny, poignant, and wise novel about a very rich underdog who shows everyone just how little his IQ says about his intelligence. Perry’s IQ is only 76, but he’s not stupid. His grandmother taught him everything he needs to know to survive. She taught him to write things down so he won’t forget them. She taught him to play the lottery every week. And most important, she taught him who to trust. When Gram dies, Perry is left orphaned and bereft at the age of 32. Then he wins twelve million dollars with his weekly Washington State Lottery ticket, and he finds he has more family than he knows what to do with. Peopled with characters both wicked and heroic who leap off the pages, Lottery is a deeply satisfying, gorgeously rendered novel about trust, loyalty, and what distinguishes us as capable.

The third scroll was dropped onto her binder as she rushed between classes at mid-morning break. The halls were crowded, she's hadn't seen anyone of note beside her – the scroll hadn't been there, then suddenly it was To her left, she spotted an open maintenance closet, full of cleaning solutions and wet mops. Stepping in, she closed the door and fumbled for the light switch. Frantically she tore at the ribbon and the wax seal, not caring if the paper ripped As her eyes reluctantly returned to the black message scrawled across the page, the light bulb's electric after-image danced across her retinas, confusing her vision, but the third scroll's contents had already been seared deep into her memory. Congratulations! You are this year's lottery winner. Every student at Saskatoon Collegiate knew that all the most important aspects of school life were controlled by a secret club called Shadow Council. Each fall, Shadow held a traditional lottery during which a single student's name was drawn. The rest of the student body called the student the lottery winner. But Shadow Council knew better; to them the winner was the lottery victim. Whatever the label, the fated student became the Council's go-fer, delivering messages of doom to selected targets. In reponse, the student body shunned the lottery winner for the entire year. This year's victim was fifteen-year-old Sally Hanson. In this tense, complex novel Beth Goobie once again stakes her claim to being Canada's finest writer of teen fiction. The Lottery is her fifteenth book. Before Wings (Orca, 2000) won the Canadian Library Assocation Young Adult Book Award, received the Mr. Christie Silver Seal Award and was a finalist for the Governor General's Award for Children's Literature.
